RUGBY FOR THE BOYS

22 Sep

Every Friday for two hours, Killian and his friend Jesse are doing rugby – rather rugby-ball skills. They aren’t actually playing rugby because they are too young, but it is like training for rugby.

It always starts with a round of warm-up and it’s a BIG field for little legs. The first time Killian had to go, his emotions just got too big for him and he just burst out crying. I could hear him from the other side of the field. Warren, his coach, is great. I loved the way he handled (and in general handles) him. He came towards him, picked him up on his back and carried on running. It was great. Killian didn’t feel ignored but he also didn’t feel embarassed or ashamed and quit eenjoyed the piggy ride.

Then for two hours, they do all sorts of passing the ball, running with the ball, throwing the ball and Killian’s favorite, tackling. Of course he would love that! They are put in teams of two for that exercise: one that tackles and one that carried the ball and is tackled. Killian and Jesse always end up  together.  Inevitably, Jesse gets tackled by Killian. But they have such fun. They often just sit on the side, wrestling each other, or they ‘sit’ with us raiding the food bag; only if Becky (Jesse’s little sister) and Matt haven’t finished it all. The bonus during these two hours is that my friend Kerry (Jesse’s mum) and I can yack and yack for two (almost uninterrupted!) hours!

One of my favorite, not quite about rugby but about two little boys, radically different yet still friends!
