After reading Lynn Austin’s Chronicles of the Kings series (the link only displays volume 1), I thought I would never read another historical fiction based on characters of the Bible. Lynn Austin managed to bring to life King Hezekiah and his son Manasseh, keeping her writing as accurately as possible to the story in the Bible.
And then Phil bought me David: The Warrior King. He thought I would like it.
David J. Ferreira (South African writer!!!) wrote an excellent book on the biblical character of David. Once again I immersed myself in the times of the Old Testament and absolutely loved surrounding myself by the life at that time. Reading the events that led to the rise of King David made me once more passionately aware of how God orchestrated (and still orchestrates) every detail of life. David’s life was filled with intrigue, deceit, faith, fear and repentance. His obedience to the Lord is all the more staggering, knowing how sin got hold of him in the later part of his life. It was actually an excellent reminder that by grace only do we stand!! I also particularly savoured the way the culture of Old Testament Israel was described and how it was brought to life with deep realism.
David J. Ferreira is working on another historical novel, a stand-alone, called The Praying Thief (with a pun on ‘preying’ and ‘praying’) before returning to the David series. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!
In the meantime, well, I guess I’ll finish the Chronicles of Narnia; different style but great read nonetheless 🙂

Hey Suse. I’ve read the Francine Rivers but haven’t enjoyed them. It’s a bit too romanticized for me. But the best ones I’ve read of Francine are A voice in the Wind (1st one), And the number two which I can’t remember now. Number three though is not so good! I think Francine got distracted and was in a hurry to finish 🙂
But the other best ones ( many bestes as you can see) are the Chronicles of the Kings by Lynn Austin. Then the OT comes to complete life and the names of the kings will stick to you forever after that – you know those names that we kind-of-know are from the Bible but not so sure where and under which circumstances… Tell me if you find them and read them and enjoy them!! 🙂
Hi – thanks for the post – I am always looking for new Christian novels, historical or otherwise, so any other recommended suggestions would be appreciated! As far as historical ones go, have you read Francine Rivers “A Lineage of Grace” (5 books, that you can get seperately or all 5 in one – looks at the 5 women named in the lineage of Christ – Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba and Mary) or “Sons of Encouragement” – same as above but looks at Aaron, Caleb, Jonathan, Amos and Silas (I didn’t like the Silas one so much, but others are good). I reccomend them, they also encouraged me to look at these characters more in the bible after I had read them, for my own interest and to make sure I got the fact as well as the fiction…!

Sorry girls, I was just reminded of it and remembered to write about it. I read the book in December and put in (in very small letters if possible….) in my other bookclub…
BUT as soon as I get it out of there, I’ll put it in our bookclub. Unless you want to get your hands on it before that! 🙂
